Throughout its history, the Virgin of the Snows has illuminated the Christian faith of the palmeros and visitors, being our main source of reflection and approach to God. Invoked as Patroness of the island and mediator between God and the palmeros, the cult of Our Lady of the Snows began to treasure great riches, fruit of the devotion and the graces obtained by the intercession of the Virgin in natural disasters, famines or epidemics.

LUSTRAL FESTIVITIES OF THE DESCENT OF THE VIRGEN DE LAS NIEVES (VIRGIN OF THE SNOWS)

It has its roots in a rich tradition dating back to the 17th century, when the inhabitants of the island sought the protection of the Virgin in times of difficulty, particularly in the face of climatic adversities and plagues During the stay of Bishop García Ximénez in La Palma, in 1676, coincided with a great drought. The people of La Palma invoked the Virgin of Las Nieves to implore her protection, bringing the Virgin down to the city. Seeing the great devotion of the people of La Palma to their Patron Saint, the Bishop decided that this descent would take place every five years starting in 1680.
