THE SURROUNDINGS

LAS NIEVES´s SQUARE

The Sanctuary and the museum

Both the Sanctuary and the Sacred Museum take us on a journey through the history of our island and how faith in the Virgin Mary has been the origin of our traditions and history.

The square

The square, paved with cobblestones and pebbles. The silence it exudes, interrupted by the sound of the water from the fountain, the jacarandas, the magnolias and the araucarias, make it a charming place.

The Fountain

The old stone fountain, with a circular basin or tank and a pillar for the fountain spout. It is a beautiful addition to the marvellous square that perfectly complements its surroundings.

PILGRIMS’ HOUSE AND PARISH CHURCH

The Casa de los Romeros was built at the end of the 17th century to house pilgrims and devotees.

El morro de las nieves

A privileged vantage point for observing the surrounding landscape, from the leafy pine forest that descends to Las Nieves, as well as the meeting of the two ravines of the River and La Madera that run down to the town. It is accessed by the path between the parish house and the Romeros house.

The ravines of the river and of La Madera

The Sanctuary is located between two deep ravines with steep, leafy slopes, which originate near the edge of the eastern crests of the Caldera de Taburiente and flow into the eastern coast of La Palma, close to the island’s capital.

Santa cruz de la Palma

Santa Cruz de La Palma is the capital of the island, a historic city founded on the 3rd of May 1493 by the adelantado Alonso Fernández de Lugo, it was the third most important port of the empire with Seville and Antwerp in the 16th century.

It has been declared a historic-artistic site, the city has temples with abundant Flemish religious art, spectacular noble houses, theatres, squares and its unique carved wooden balconies overlooking the sea.
