Coronation
CORONATION
On the splendid and luminous morning of 22nd June 1930, the holy image of Nuestra Señora de las Nieves was canonically crowned by the Nuncio of His Holiness in Spain and Archbishop of Lepanto, later Prince of the Church, His Excellency, and Most Reverend Federico Tedeschini y Serina, with the Papal Bull of Pope Pius XI. It should be noted that it was the first time that a Nuncio of His Holiness had travelled to the Canary Islands. The solemn religious function was officiated in the Rambla de Cuba, now Avenida del Puente, at the height of Calle Pérez Volcán in Santa Cruz de La Palma. The crowns of the Virgin and the Child, which were new for the occasion, were made in Madrid in the Granda workshops with gold and precious stones from the jewels offered by the people of La Palma and those collected by popular subscription since 1926 by the Junta de Damas ‘Pro-Coronación’ (Pro-Coronation Board of Ladies). Don Tomás Sotomayor y Pinto and Doña Rosario de Becerra y Cosmelli, who donated a large amount of valuable jewels for the construction of the medals, acted as godparents.
